Former Chairman of White House Council of Economic Advisers Named Professor of Practice at Harvard Kennedy School

Jason Furman has been named Professor of the Practice of Economic Policy at Harvard Kennedy School (HKS), it was announced today by HKS Dean Douglas Elmendorf

Furman served as chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers (CEA) from 2013 to 2017. At the time of his appointment, President Obama called Furman “one of the most brilliant economic minds of his generation.” Prior to his appointment to CEA, Furman served as Deputy Director of the National Economic Council and Assistant to the President. His research and policy interests macroeconomic policy, labor markets, taxes, technology, and health policy. 

“Jason Furman is one of the nation’s leading policy economists, and he has played a key role in developing and analyzing economic policy in many areas for the past two decades,” said Elmendorf. “We are excited that he will be joining our faculty, working with other professors and students, and helping shape the Kennedy School’s teaching, research, and engagement with practitioners regarding economic policy.”

Furman will be affiliated with the school’s Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government, which is directed by Lawrence H. Summers, Charles W. Eliot University Professor and former director of the National Economic Council, and co-directed by John Haigh, the school’s executive dean. 

“I had the great pleasure of working closely with Jason at the White House, during which time our economic team faced many difficult challenges,” said Summers. “Jason brings an extraordinary combination of academic scholarship and government leadership experience to the Kennedy School, and we are proud to welcome him to the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government.”

Furman held a variety of posts in public policy and research before his time in the Obama administration. He worked at both the CEA and the National Economic Council during the Clinton administration. He also worked at the World Bank and served as a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. He currently serves as a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. Furman earned his A.B. from Harvard College, a M.Sc. from the London School of Economics, and a Ph.D. from Harvard.

“I am happy to join the esteemed faculty at Harvard Kennedy School,” said Furman. “I am excited to be returning to Harvard to teach and to engage with students, faculty, and researchers from around the world. I very much look forward to starting my work here.”

Furman’s appointment begins on July 1. He will continue to be affiliated with the Peterson Institute for International Economics.
